Progression of Student Abilities in Control of Variables in an Introductory Physics Lab CourseDeveloping scientific reasoning (SR) skills is a major goal of modern day education. The economy and future work force call for a shift of education goals from content drilling towards fostering higher end skills on reasoning, creativity, and open problem solving. Unfortunately, the typical introductory science course does not significantly impact students in these areas. Although SR has become a widely targeted domain of high end skills in STEM learning, the knowledge base for the impact of SR-targeted curriculum along with assessment of SR is not widespread in the research community. This NSF project works to address the gap in the literature by developing a first semester introductory physics lab curriculum specifically designed to develop select SR skills, as well as provide evidence for how the course activities and their specific strategies affect college student development of SR, thereby bringing advancement in a much needed area. This presentation will briefly describe how the lab curriculum was developed to target one of the SR domains, i.e. student abilities in control of variables (COV), using an SR-curriculum framework developed by the project team. The assessment tool chosen for this project is Inquiry into Student Thinking and Reasoning (iSTAR) which was developed by the research team before the start of the project. A brief discussion of the instrument will be provided along with a description of nine of the questions which measure student understanding of COV. These questions have been written with various complexity levels such that student performance on the questions provides an indication of where they are in the progression for developing more complex COV reasoning skills. Pre- and post-assessment data for students enrolled in the lab course the previous year will be presented to showcase how the curriculum impacts student reasoning abilities in COV as well as showcase the impact of the curriculum in moving students to the higher levels of reasoning. The presentation will end with a description of how the pre- and post-test data are used to inform future lab curriculum improvements as well as what other SR domains are being targeted as part of the project.
